I did a 10km race last weekend. It was absolute hell, like running in a sauna without water. The organizers really screwed up. Here is an exert from their apology of sorts...

The once-off nature of this event made it challenging to predict what the running conditions were going to be like inside the tunnel, particularly with 5,000 individuals running.

At the start of the race, the ventilation was on at approximately 2 metres per second with fans blowing behind the participants. On being relayed reports of the tough conditions, the tunnel operators responded by increasing the jet fan speed. This took 10 – 15 minutes to take effect. By this time, while some reprieve may have been noticed, many were already feeling the effects of the heat.

Unfortunately, this had a flow-on effect on the level of water consumption by the runners. There were water stations provided at the 2km, 4km, 7km and 9km points along the course, with a total of 5 x 100ml water sachets provided for each participant. At the Finish line, extra water and hydration fluid was provided.

We expected this amount of water should have been sufficient based on previous experience. Unfortunately, the unique nature of the CLEM7 Tunnel Run meant it was not an ‘average’ running event, and participants were in need of more water than what would usually be required for a 10km race.

We apologise to those who were affected by these issues.

Outside of the ventilation and water issues, we have received positive feedback about the other aspects of race organisation.
