Your logic is good.
My path too and from work involves an 8-10 minute walk to the subway, avg. 15-20 minutes on the subway, 5 minute walk to the office once downtown. Repeat in reverse order at the end of the day.
Always out to lunch, sometimes listen to my portable cd player, and sometimes take it along in the mornings.I would benefit from one, and one of the main reasons to get one would be to avoid carrying around purchased CD's and risk scratching them.
Also, I usually carry a paperback book, small bound journal for song lyrics, an umbrella, sometimes an 8x10 sketchbook, and a magazine or two in my bag.
An ipod would be a little lighter and less cumbersome than a cd player.For someone always in a car and not walking much, I don't think you'd get your money's worth.
