man, for under 1K you can get some good shit. I thought you were going for like 200-300. You can get a used Les Paul Studio, which are awesome. Or a used American strat for that money. If you're just starting I'm not sure I'd drop 1K. My first guitar was some random build guitar. Like 300 bucks, but worked fine and sounded fine. Remember, you need an amp and potentially distortion pedal too.
But if you got 1K check out a Les Paul Studio. I'll be the lone LP person here. I don't deal well with strats. Too light, not a big fan of the tone... neck and playability will depend on the model. LP's are heavier too, which I love.
I also wouldn't start on acoustic, only because it's harder on your fingers and may be easier to say "fuck this". Plus if you get a hot distortion box (Metal Zone by BOSS for example), you can suck more at playing, but mask it from the distortion until you're better.
I'd also think what type of music you like. Blues? get a strat or tele. Metal? Jackson or ESP (or Les Paul). LP's are good for either type of music to me. Or drop a lot of money and get a PRS.
I like ismiths custom sense. I'm having a custom LP done now. Fishman bridge, EMG's, kill switch, and dark translucent purple finish. So excited for it!! ...but still waiting for a few more months.
