Biggestdog, have you seen the Zune interface? It's a very similar UI. While I don't have a Zune I have played around with a friends and I'd disagree that the UI is not functional. The navigation is definitely different than your run of the mill linear navigation but it feels pretty organic. And it's way cleaner than conventional navigation b/c you don't have these static buttons all over the place, taking up screen space.
Mobile 7 seems like Zune on steroids...we'll see if MS can maintain control over the interface and keep it clean and simple. So far it looks good to me. As a designer I'm excited to see a canvas UI used so well in a mobile experience.
