    Kind of Blue may have been conceived without chords, but that's because Miles simply walked into the recording studio and hummed a melody. A few minutes later they slapped on two chords and history was made. Without chords (aka limitations/constraints) the melody would have no place to live and the improvisation wouldn't quite work. I agree, fresnobob, that argument not only fails to back up their point, it actually negates it.
