dink, you're not a noob. but i'll answer anyway, solid is a specified Pantone® color based on their formulae etc. Process is a CMYK blend that matches a specific PMS color, coated refers to the PMS color when applied to coated paper, and the same with uncoated. If you get the coated, uncoated, matte swatch books, you can see how the color will be on the those three types of substrates making it easier for you to choose the right color for your project. hope this helps.
