This depends almost entirely on your frame of mind and the career path on which the move would put you.

You say you're an Art Director in London. That's great, but is it at a place on a similar level to the shop in NYC? Would the move be a considerable bump to your career, regardless of the salary? Or is it more or less a lateral move and mainly for the change in scenery?

NYC is one of the most expensive places in the world, and it's true that a car is more or less unnecessary. However, sound, safe living quarters is something else entirely, isn't it.

That being said, if you're inclined to play it safe, I say go for the move. Even if it's a bad one, it'll build character and hopefully provide you with some good experience and portfolio work.
