i tend to cut my letter forms out of foam and let them float in a aluminum pan roughly twice the size of the letters to allow ample spacing to occur. once i have poured water into the pan and let it come to a still, i, gently as i can, place the letters atop the water. every time no matter how hard i try, i upset the water again, so i leave the room and return once the water and now letters as well have come to a still. this usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. i then photograph these letters as they have settled and use live trace to re-vectorize the image after contrasting it to b&w using legacy in photoshop. I have noted using this process, that as it relies on outlines and not actual fonts, it is best to double check your spelling.
