    This is the wide-angle lens with the shallowest DOF:

    The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for Canon!

    It is wider than your kit lens, and will produce a blurred background if your subject is close enough to the camera.

    The next best lens for your purposes, benfal, is the sigma 10-20mm f3.5 for canon:

    I am linking you to a rental site for both of these lenses so you can try them out before you decide to buy them. The tokina is $600 and the sigma is $650. Both of them are cheaper, and have shallower depth of field, than the house-brand Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5, which runs $700. I should mention, though, that I have rented that same canon lens four time and have been pleased with the results.
