argh..... optical physics....
Try using the lens you have, use in M manual or AV mode, set your aperture to F3.5, 18mm and get as close as possible to your subject with the background as far as possible, you will get at least some blurry background... make sure there is light on the background...try outdoor late afternoon for side light....
Otherwise, get a 50mm F1.8 lens for $105, set it to F1.8 or F2, get about 3 feet from subject with background far away and see how blurry background can be...
Switching brands doesn't make much difference if the lenses are similar focal length and f-stop.... some $$$ sigmas are F1.8, but big and expensive and twitchy AF...
a tilt-shift photoshop filter may interest you too.....
