Its a clone of a non fertile plant. It doesn't produce seeds but it can be replicated through cuttings. Thing is though, each cutting will produce identical tomatoes, and eventually some kind of blight will overcome the cloned plant type and because it can't develop any natural defenses it will get wiped out.
Its the same with bananas. Every banana you eat is a clone of a source plant that produced an edible 'right' seeming banana. Every twenty years or so a new strain of banana ha to be sourced and cultivated for trade because they previous type has been iradicated by some kind of blight.
