i agree with detritus - fuck east london and all the self-regarding tossers who live there. explore the city instead
here's a day in London:
Start at Sir John Soane's museum. It's free and extraordinary. Wander through Lincoln's Inn and soak up the dickensian atmosphere. Cross Fleet Street into Middle Temple and pop your head into the Templar church. Forget Dan Brown, this is real history. Back down Fleet street and pass by the Art Deco masterpiece that is the old Daily Express building. Duck through a back alley and spend some time in St Bride's Library - it's a fabulous library of printing and typography. Maybe grab a late lunch in the Black Friar pub with it's extraordinary interior. Walk on across the Millenium Bridge and there's the Tate Modern, if that floats your boat. I'd give the Tate a miss and walk along the river to London Bridge, past the replica Golden Hind, through Borough Market and go see the Old Operating Theatre - straight out of Elephant Man.So now you need a drink - hop onto the Jubilee Line at London Bridge and head off to Green Park. just round the corner is Dukes Hotel, St James`s, where you can tuck into what most people agree are London's best Martinis, before heading off to the Blues Bar in Kingly Street and get up close and personal with some live blues band until the small hours.
Apart from the drinks and travel this is all free.
