I think it works like this, you have to learn it by yourself... whether you go to school or not ... BUT going to school gives you certain contacts you will not get on your own and that can make a big difference in getting a job, freelance or otherwise, afterwards.
-I was a jr economist in 99 (hated it)
-took a year course at a community college in 2000, anything that had to do with portfolio building, I killed, everything else i didn't even hand in. had my first freelance gig by december.
-finished in 2001, working at a reputable agency by the fall of 2001anyways that was my experience. oh and flash is about continually learning, better get used to it now.
