I just got my band new Firewire 800 powerbook! Its a freaking great machine. I wouldn't get it if I did a lot of 3D stuff.
The new 15inchers are excellent machines I would highly reccommend it to any designer.
BTW if you bought a G5 you probably would get a Cinema display. If you got powerbook you don't NEED a cinema display. However I would reccommend finding a good CRT to hook it up to for color reasons. The LCD on the powerbbok is great but you can never trust the colors you choose unless you look at it on another display. CRTs are just cheaper than cinema displays.
And get the apple care its like $129 with the edu discount so find a friend that is still in school to buy it for you and transfer it over to you later.
