    yeah, i think these things can be pretty good. i mean, if you've used a filter in photoshop, rounded corners in indesign or the envelope distort in illustrator you've used preset designs / styles.

    the key to good design is to solve a given communication problem with a simple solution and good design. if you use a preset element then the better designers/developers will tweak them.

    i mean, how many people here have used Lightbox (or similar) for pop-up images on clients websites? what's the difference between using that and say and mp3 player from flash den.

    the funny thing is where do you draw the line? if you buy a great opentype font and use variations of that for a logo and branding package then are you cheating by not creating a font from scratch? should you use photoshop or create an application from scratch?

    in my experience you need to have a good idea what you're doing to really make the most of the templates / elements you can buy from these online options. good will always show through i think.
