What is it exactly that you want to do? What kind of connection do you have now? What's the problem with 'crappy router'? I have both, (actually one is Time Capsule, which is an Extreme with a hard drive) but they're not the most stable solution ever.
You should be good with an Express though, plugged into the router. It helps if you switch the router's wifi off.
Prepare for cursing during setup, learn how to reset airports..
