  I'm sorry, but tough times call for a wake-up call. These are lessons that need to be screamed. Not ham-handed inbetween compliments.

  Designers communicate. Designers solve problems.

  Maybe when times are good again he can waste portfolio space showcasing rubik's cube with rubber glued to them.

  My advice to OP: Find a local small business, a non-profit, an organization you believe in, and show how your skills can actually help them communicate, help them solve a problem.

  Do work for capitalism, do work for socialism, do work for society. Just don't work for other designers.
