I agree with your assertion that academia is failing students in their instruction. I feel like an undergrad needs to learn the programs, a good understanding of type, color, composition and the rest (conceptually) is kind of on them. I know that a lot of undergrad programs have DRASTICALLY different approaches - from Ringling (more portfolio) to Yale (more concept)... So, I'm saying that I understand your argument - but I feel in THIS particular case, that he is showing both his abilities as a modern-designer AND some concepts. Would I like to see better of both? sure - but my grievance comes in the form of the critique. The world is a really scary place for a "newly certified" designer and while his work can clearly be better, can ANY of us say that we've reached the PINNACLE of our works' potential? I would be more constructive than dismissive - thats why he asked us to critique his work in the first place.
