    I think marketing can also revamp a team. I have to say that when the NHL's Ducks changed hands that the new ownership, new look, etc. amped up the team...so much they won the Cup in '07. Their community involvement is also anchored in the OC giving them a big presence in the local area. They have a hospital wing at CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County), a science exhibit in a local Science Center (Taco Bell Discovery Center's "Science of Hockey"). The Anaheim Angels, who are just about right next door can't say that.

    I guess it gets to a bigger question -- what are our sports teams for? Not just a love of the sport. What's their meaning and who in marketing gets that meaning right?
