I did this at the beginning of the year, knowing that I drank way too much and it was getting to interfere with my life a little. It doesn't matter if it interferes a little or a lot, it's supposed to be enjoyable and not a task that you HAVE to do to join a group of friends or to have a good time. It's the dessert, not the main course.

If you can get past the initial "oh, comeon, what do you mean you don't drink?" phase, you can go as long as you like. I will say that the first month was tough, it seemed pretty long and I constantly felt like I was excluded from activities, because I wasn't heading to the bar to see my "friends". Well, now that I mention it, are they really friends? I don't see them unless I drink, so what actual impact do they have on my life?

Set a short term goal, like three months, which I have already proven is super doable, and do it. See what changes, see if you miss the people at the bars. What you will probably discover, as I have, is that you feel better, have a pile more money, and only hang out with people you REALLY like and REALLY like you.

You also don't wake up sick. Huge perk.
