Not sure I still understand what you mean, but can't you do pathfind on each element you want to use as a single object, and then put each object on separated layer?
take some time, but then your file should be clean and ready for use in after effect.- well, won't work if your illustration is too complex...
dyspl - yeah, that is what i means... i have some EPS files that comes with about a 100 path's layers inclueded on one single layerMasterramos

- hehe, the job can't be fun all the time. I also have to reduce shapes on the tshirt illustration is ok.... i'd say tricky, but not so boring after all.dyspl
