Macs used to be those preconfigured, easy to use computers for everyone, they were set up to be smarter than the user. Geeks and devs hated them for it.
Apple redesigned the whole thing to run on BSD/Unix, now the system can be configured in million ways via terminal. It can be used right out of the box or customized to every geek liking. Most of these config apps are just wrappers for these pref commands.
