Most of your rant is based on your os habits you would never have had you not been using Windows. That doesn't make them that much less valid though.
- Edge grabbing - part of my rant, but I don't miss it after all that time.
- Maximise/Minimise a window.
Just doesn't work the same way. There is a kind of "minimizing to dock", which is independent of "hiding" (⌘+h)
- Cut/Copy/Paste
Set up your function keys to work like they do in Windows:
Go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Modifier Keys...
- Sorting a folder by name doesn't group the folders/files.
Finder stinks in a few spots, they rewrote the whole thing for the new os edition due soon.
Long time Total Commander user, I use Forklift, it is brilliant and sorts out other gripes, including uninstalling software (that's right, OSX cannot properly uninstall software in 2009).
www.binarynights.com- I want a black desktop.
It's not for lazy ubuntians, it's for creative/multimedia types.
They roll their own gifs.
- Can't create a shortcut to a network drive - only something within it. Really useful.
Try dragging them from Finder's Devices list, rather than Shared list. It probably has to do with mounting point or something. Irritating indeed.
There are behaviours that annoyed the shit out of me at the beginning, but they turn out to be useful features.
Example: in Finder's "open/save file" dialog (when browsing for a file from an app) you cannot edit the files in the view. In Windows you can rename files/folders, drag them and whatnot, still browsing for your file (or a place to save one).
OSX behaviour is different but useful: you can drag files from anywhere onto the open/save view and the view path jumps to that file. This proved to be much more useful.
If I tried this in Windows, I would copy or move the file from its location to the view's.
