when I was college we would just keep a phone book handy, right next to the toilet. while you were doing your "duty" you'd just rip out a couple of pages and wad them up, work them around in your hands a bit to break up those fibers and make them tolerable.
I'm not sure if that fucked up the environment, but at least we figured out what to do with that fucking phone book shit.
