I've never been to australia, but I'm going to guess (as a freelancer) that it all comes down to:
a) luck
b) ability to network/ negotiatetalent or location have nothing to do with being able to collect clients.
My guess is, get some business cards and start meeting people, go to non-design conferences (conference possible clients will attend) email every design studio in town and let them know you are there, cold calls / emails may help, specially when the client/agency IS NOT LOOKING TO HIRE.
