I have gotten into a routine with my son that is rather rewarding though i feel silly doing it. he is 3.5 and has a little plush puppy who he named deebee. he has gotten to the age of imaginary friends and deebee is his entire world. i tuck them both in at night, hugs and kisses for both. he tells me when deebee is hungry or sad, and he makes whiny noises. he makes him bark. he makes him play and lick faces when he's happy. it's quite possibly the cutest thing i've ever seen. this stuffed animal means so much to him. it's his velveteen rabbit.

i also have 3 real dogs. recently, while taking them all out to potty aidan mentions that deebee has to potty too. so i take the dogs out and then, clipping the leash to the little toy's collar i take deebee out too. i stood there in the mud holding a stuffed toy thinking "how will i explain this if one of my neighbors comes out?"

i walk back inside and aidan asks me what he did. i tell him he peed and pooped. he seems satisfied with that and goes back to playing with his toys.

now, everytime i take the dogs out aidan tells me deebee has to go too. and, everytime, i stand outside holding a little stuffed toy under my arm thinking, "aidan is never going to remember this, but it means so much to him now."
