we have to do a moderate update on this little book, and I'd like to do it on uncoated paper, but I'm deathly afraid it will end up looking drab and flat. There's a lot of spot grey ink and color photography. Currently it's on matte coated, with matte laminate on the cover. Do you think it's worth the risk?

    • almost no type

    • yeah, I can't go that far.

    • How about a really toothy uncoated with spot gloss varnish AND spot matte varnish? Contrast!MrOneHundred
    • Can't you have a draw-down done with the gray on some potential stocks to see if you like it?NotByHand
    • what I'm really afraid of is all the grey

    • Or is it the photography that you fear will suck?NotByHand
    • we are having drawdowns, but it's so hard to gauge the net overall effect

    • I know the photos will be more subdued, and I think that's ok to a degree, but I'm afraid

    • True - but that's why 'you get the big bucks', right :)NotByHand
    • that the net effect with the grey will be flat and dark

    • Have you seen the drawdowns already?NotByHand
    • My biggest concern with going uncoated would be that the solid areas of gray could appear...NotByHand
    • ... a little more 'speckled' or not as clean (you know what I mean). But you should be able to tell...NotByHand
    • ... from the drawdowns.
      Maybe double hits?

    • there's also a spot metallic, so all the 6 wells are accounted for

    • potential upside doesn't seem worth it

    • thanks for the input

    • A good uncoated won’t speckle.MrOneHundred
    • it would be Mohawk superfine
      ********
    • You shouldn’t get any speckling with that.MrOneHundred
    • Yeah, you should be fine with Mohawk. I didn't mean speckling per say... just, it's different on uncoated.NotByHand
    • From the pictures, it looks like it would be nice on uncoated (imo).NotByHand
    • i have a piece like this on uncoated with full bleed black with aqueous coating and it doesn't look drab._salisae_
    • beautiful book btw_salisae_
    • what is it?_salisae_
    • Maybe talk to your printer about aqua sealing stock first and then printing over that to keep it punchy?Horp
