Tom, you're over-thinking it. You gotta just be spontaneous about things like these.
I have a story in the vein of Horps as well, from when I was about your age:
I woke up on a Monday morning, finding it difficult with the motivation to work at this Medical Laboratory where I worked during the summer-break (college years). I thought to my self "fuck it"... grabbed the yellow-pages, and called various airlines for ticket options. Within 2 hours I was on my way to Paris. Once I landed there, I found a pay-phone and called in sick with the classic 'over-the-top coughing and sniffling'. Stayed for 4 days. One of the most memorable weeks of my life.Some day, when you're old, it is things like these that you will look back upon and be happy you did.
Now, go pack a few things, go get your ticket, and get on your way.
