    i don't think you can divorce state action from the particularities of this conflict. imposing a Jewish state in a land that has been dominated by Muslims for 1400 years.

    it's the uncompromising nature of the religious element of this conflict that gives it the particular nature. A belief in the God given right for an ethnically superior Jewish state, couched in biblical terms. A Judaeo-Jihad if you will.

    The threat is not a threat to any perceived "nationalism", though that plays a part. But it's a threat to a messianic project, that traces Jewish history from Moses, to expulsion by the Romans, to the Holocaust. it's a culmination of a narrative arch that needs to be fulfilled.

    For you see, nationalisms are able to absorb other ethnicties, but here they are not fighting so much for the state. But for the "Jewish character" of that state.
