Hey all. So I figured out the issue. I opened the disable_activation_osx file as a text document and copied the text into terminal, as opposed to using the instructions here which use commands to reference the file.
If anybody else has the 'permission denied' problem, try this. Just copy and paste the code text into terminal. Then, after you see 'process complete', simply re-start and you should be good to go.
Also, be sure to be disconnected from the internet when you set up/use CS4
