When wine is made there are estimates on a) when it's drinkable; b) when it's reached its optimum state; c) when it's no longer acceptable. Each wine is different. When a bottle hits the shelves of your local liquor stores it's somewhere between "a" and "c".

Personally, we always et bottles back for "special" celebrations. We just make sure we have a lot of "special" celebrations and the wine never goes bad. :D
