I've just built my first few sites with EE -- as it turned out I've had to build 3 at the same time. I had done some basic stuff with Wordpress in the past. Once I got my head around the relationship between elements, EE was very straightforward to use, template, and implement on all sites. I think Wordpress is great but EE allowed the freedom I needed. In fact one of the clients came to us looking for a wordpress site and we had to persuade them to go down the EE route.
There were some issues I had with elements that I would have expected to be built-in, such as a client-side rich text editor, but all in all it was good value for money.
