I once started a new job Nov. 1.
I told them in my interview that I would be out of town from around Dec. 20-Jan 5 or so. It was partially true, but really I was just sick of work and wanted some time to chill.
I got the time off (unpaid of course) with no problem.
Whoever said that you're new and they won't care... that was certainly the case for me. I think it depends on the work place though.
