I like to think I invented the away message on AIM.
Before me, everyone was just simply, "I am away from my computer right now."
Then one day, I wrote the immortal words, "Jerry Likey. Jerry Want Wingie!" This let people in the know, who knew it was Tuesday, that I was at all you can eat wings at Quaker Steak (and also that I liked the movie Tommy Boy).
Upon returning to the literal tens of IMs that nite, I realized I had changed the interwebz forever. Almost (if not) a decade later... I still put up away messages despite the now literal three's of people I talk to on it.
Weird part is that I'd meet people at parties and they be like, "Holy shit, you're Jerome! I check your away messages all the time!" Because people would see me in other people's infos with some pithy comment and then add me as a result.
Sorry for the stroll down memory lane there.
I still clutch all my year-end awards for funniest away messages as security blankets when I go to sleep at nite.
