Last week I was a Senior Web Designer at a large worldwide corporation making in the low $50's.
I have just received a promotion to Creative Director for the US division of the corporation and expect a pay raise to the $60's.
I make a middle class wage and in a couple of years at Creative Director I can make expect a wage in the $80's.
If I stay in the corporate work chain, then the next step for me is Director of Marketing ($90K) and then VP of Marketing ($110K).
It's the safe way to go and the work is safe and often boring and always filled with corporate meandering and often corporate greed.
I could after a couple of years of Creative Director under my belt, take a risk and start my own company or try for an agency, but my wife is a painter (no money), a house and some kids and it looks like I'll take the safe bet.
I worked for a couple internet startups when I was single. The Aeron Chairs, the fussball tables, the creative work was great, but the constant insecurity was awful. Plus the unemployment office was horrible and humiliating.
Thanks a lot... now I'll be contemplating my life for the rest of the day!!!
However, I do feel blessed and that's rich enough. I don't have a degree, I'm totally self-taught and I make a nice middle class salary with cool perks like digital cameras, laptops, etc.
