For my entire adult voting life I've lived through a series of political disappointments.

As an Australian I saw John Howard elected twice -- a racist, spineless, backward looking conservative. (I appreciate that most of you will be saying "who"?)

Then when I moved to the UK I witnessed massive popular movements against going into Iraq -- we still went in and Tony Blair and George W still benefited from majority votes and they still made personal fortunes from ordinary peoples' misery.

It became harder and harder not to think that most people are idiots and that the powerful elite would always pass power on to the powerful elite. You didn't need to be eloquent or visionary, just aggressive and conservative, to hold on to power.

Obama's election is of course only the beginning, and the proof as they say will be in the pudding, but just the idea of an eloquent, intelligent, conciliatory, outward-looking, mixed race US President speaks volumes to the younger generations of this world.

Most people are not idiots! That's something to feel positive about.
