Congrats to the Obama-maniacs.
I see all of this overwhelming joy - but what I don't see is a clear explanation of the joy.
What's got you pumped up about President Obama? Is it his political views? His age? His race? Him just not being Bush / Republican?
Enlighten me!

^ The end of Bush era, for me, i wish!!

Seriously...all this "hope", "not bush" stuff is great.....but pretty run of the mill. Does anyone have anything specific...anything concrete?
Can anyone point to a wonderful policy or piece of legislation they believe Obama will push through?
- threadpost0
Oh knock it off. run of the mill? what mill? what do you compare it to that is so commonplace to be just some everyday run of the mill event?
- jevad0
If you have to ask, you'll never know.
- threadpost0
you should prove to me why you love your wife or why you love doing one of your hobbies. cause seriously until you do, I dont think your reasons are very concrete.
I think hope pretty much says it all, and I'm under no obligation to you or anyone else to explain why I feel hopeful. I just do.- why so defensive? if you didn't want to answer, just skip the thread. it's an honest question.sublocked

he's got big plans to develop long term environment friendly alternative energy. he intends to build up a social health care structure similar to what we have here in europe. he intends to leave iraq. he wants to redistribute the wealth.
where is he gonna get the money for all this? I don't know, but the intentions are there, and there all good. in reality, I imagine he'll be picking up the pieces of the bush administration ruins in the next 4 years.
- thanks...this i can respect, even if i don't agree with the "redistribute the wealth" part.sublocked
- People don't realize it's their money to be redistributed, not his.rafalski
- it's not "people's" money that he's "redistributing"! chrissake, it's finally ending corporate tax cuts. how is this socialism!?!?!paraselene

if you can't see what it means for this young african american to be elected, i probably can't persuade you of it's significance or importance.
i will say one thing. his ability to motivate and inspire a nation, a new, younger, and more progressive generation who questions everything it's been taught to believe - this is one thing that i believe no other candidate could offer. and given the times we are in, it's value is much greater than a 'policy or piece of legislation' that any veteran politician could offer.
perhaps through our vote, we are being the change we wish to see in the world.
- well stated, thanks!sublocked
- i don't think our generation is progressive at all! we're the least likely to even have an opinion, how can we question politics?SlashPeckham

@stevejobs
...I agree it's a HISTORIC event. One which someone only gets to witness perhaps a few times in their life. Obama is the American dream incarnate. Anyone who is hating on that is an idiot.
Also you make a wonderful point about his ability to motivate and inspire the masses. He is a wonderful public speaker and a very charismatic leader!
I HOPE that Obama is a wonderful president. Lord knows America needs it! However, what I FEAR is that his viewpoint seems to shift on political issues and his track record is hard to read, what with all the "present" views.
I don't agree with the socialist tendencies he holds, especially his idea of "tax credits" and "redistributing the wealth".
It will be interesting to see where he leads this country.
- "present" votes rather...sublocked

The campaign was absolutely brilliant, you can tell that when even people who work in advertising got a excited as they were recently.
Policies-wise, Obama showed where he stood not so long ago when he supported the 700 billion scam. Let's see where it goes from here.
- Also my fear. Obama's MARKETING is great - but are we getting a great product?sublocked

Stevejobs. my friend you are dead on.
My joy for the win has 2 sides. I am happy with our selection and I'm very confident he will do a great job as president.
But the thing that has me really happy and fired up. Is for the first time in my life we have a president I respect and admire as a person. I don't know him personally but judging on the many decisions he has made through out his campaign he is a straight up person that understands the average american. Like stevejobs said, his ability to motivate and make us feel proud to be an American will be the change we are looking for. The fact that we now have an African-American president is a HUGH morality booster for this country. I dont know your nationality or what its like for you where you grew up, so maybe you cant relate on this topic... but for me; being a Mexican American, I have seen some pretty bad stuff. Most of my life I have felt like a complete outsider in a country where I was born and raised. I have always looked at presidents as people who lead our country but had no idea what a young minority went through growing up in America. Now we have a man who knows what its like, he understands what its really like out here.
So when I hear people talk about change, I'm really not thinking about Washington and how its run... I'm thinking about this country.... I'm thinking about the soul and the idea that is America.
For the first time in my life I have real genuine hope for America.I'm not sure if I was able to convey my feelings accurately....
It's more than presidential election, it goes way deeper than that.
- I agree, the new President comes across as genuine, but without being cringe worthy, even a sense and understanding of the everyday person.roundabout

I seriously think it's been a long time since the western world has felt as optimistic as it does today for so many reasons. Yes there is a massive mountain to climb but just for today we can be happy at this huge day in history. As someone on here posted a few times and I know it's a bit cliched but this man truly sums it up.
- :) I posted it. One of my favorite songs. Thanks for posting it.sofakingbanned

why do americans have to call every government effort to provide with a better life for people who are less fortunate socialist? redistributing wealth might mean for example providing with good education for everyone..... it's not about giving all your hard earned money to lazy bums.....
- Yeah. There are a few fucktards spouting about communism an ww3 who don't know arse from elbowbabaganush

@sofakingbanned ...Haven't heard it explained that well before. Thanks!
I personally am a mixed-race person, but I look (and am) mostly of european descent. I came up in Sacramento, and live in SJ, CA right now. So I definitely feel you and where you're coming from. :)

PS - sofakingbanned, minorities don't have the monopoly on "looking at presidents as people who lead our country but had no idea" what it's like growing up.
i think the age and style of Obama has a lot to do with his draw as well.

Hopefully just one word is needed to help enlighten you, it is called "idealism".

If Bush was so hated and so despised, why did you vote him in for a second time with an increased majority?
