There was a 3+ hour documentary on Australian TV last week about the election and the 2 candidates, and while I was already a massive supporter of Obama, some of the information it imparted gave me even greater respect for the man.
He started out relatively alone in all of this. Coming from a place far away, he managed to make Chicago his home, and for a time called Boston his home, but throughout all of it his goal was to help those less fortunate than him. They weren't from his home town, he had no affiliation with any of these people that he met, but he wanted to help all of them.
When he found that community activism wasn't going to bring about the change he desired, he moved onto bigger things, and eventually into politics.
They chronicled his life quite closely from his speech at the DNC in '04 all the way 'til now, and it cannot be disputed that he is an amazingly inspiring man, a great orator, fiercely intelligent, and possesses a wealth of other talents that the current president is all but completely lacking in.
The other comments on here about the whole world breathing a sigh of relief at this outcome could not be more accurate. We've watched the last 8 years in a mix of horror and disbelief as an administration has effectively destroyed the credibility of the world's greatest super-power.
It is my hope that by electing this man that the restoration of faith in the US is a real possibility, and that he can affect real and lasting change. The changes might not be obvious within the first term of his administration, but his election alone stands as a clear indicator that the US has had enough, and that they want change.
Last but not least, while the polls were closer in the US, the polls in Australia were more like 90-10 to Obama. There was nothing about the Republican mindset or their policies throughout the election that endeared themselves to Australia, or indeed the world at large. I thought I might have cried when Obama won, but if McCain had won, I definitely would have cried.
