    My understanding is that the template is the USPS "guideline" for sending mass mailings.

    They've got machines configured to automatically process the stuff, and they're trying to get everyone to optimize their own envelopes to fit the format.

    If you print below the line, they'll probably still deliver it. But it really depends on how much risk you want to take.

    If you're sending out a few letters a week for yourself, it's one thing.

    But if it's for a client that's going to be regularly mass mailing to customers or something, you might want to stick to the template.
