The thing about starting out in freelance is that it will be filled with painful business lessons and financial instability.
But It also gives you more creative freedom & opportunity to take ownership of your development. You will spend more of your time designing rather than just doing production shit-work.
It seems to me that you can get past being a production artist faster if you spend a lot of time working on your own clients. and then you can get a better position when you do go to a studio or agency.
