25 years ago, when I worked in a bar, I invented a summer cocktail called the "freon dream." The exact makeup of the freon dream is long forgotten, but I do recall it was a little honeydew melonish, a little pimm's cupish, shaved icy kind of thing, not too sweet, a lovely pale green that seemed to glow in evening light. I was a young man who still thought he might become a writer, I had an editor at the New Yorker who was slated to take over for William Shawn but was later dumped in favor of Tina Brown, and though I couldn't have given a shit about the bar I worked in, or mixed drinks in general, I created this drink in the spirit that anything worth doing is worth doing well and subtly. In the ensuing 25 years many people have died and almost everything has been forgotten, including my drink , until now, in the blog.
