We did the same a few weeks ago. Drove up from NYC and ended up in Burlington for dinner, walked around a bit downtown, and finally just decided to crash at one of those business hotel places. We debated on hitting the Ben&Jerry's tour in the morning but were too anxious to get up to Montreal. Getting back and forth is a lot easier with passports or birth certificates, but we had neither with us, and it was fine after a few questions. In Montreal, definitely stay up near St.Denis & Avenure du Mont Royale. The little information booth by the MontRoyal subway stop has a great list of all the B&B's in the area. We made 2 calls and found a great place across the street from Parc La Fontaine. Old Montreal is cool to walk around for maybe an hour by very touristy. The contemporary art museum is pretty decent as well, but all the good stuff is up around St.Denis & St.Laurent as mentioned.
