dude by the sounds of it they aren't a potential client that will pay you for work in the future. you have nothing to lose by telling them "pay up or fuck off" (use better terminology here). You have some self-respect to gain and/or some hard cash. The only reason to do it for free is if it's for some charitable org that you really love or they aren't picky and you can design whatever you want.
