I think it sounds like 'you've been unemployed for 7 months' as opposed to 'waiting for the right opportunity'.
Heads of studios would probably rather have a freelancer taking employment by choice as opposed to someone freelance who no one will employ. Forget the employment circumstances and eek out what benefit you brought to the job. I think this day and age it doesn't matter if your freelance or employed. See your freelance time as a benefit and self-liberating - many employers see it is a bonus. I personally don't have much respect for anyone who's never stood on their own 2 feet at one point or another.
