    different cameras!

i was in this dilema months ago.
tossup between the Ricoh GRD / GRDII / GX100 / Sigma DP1 etc.
spent weeks pixelpeeping on flickr and reading every review i could.

The GRD has some nice features like its grainy noise reduction which gives an effect like filmgrain rather than pixelsmearing compression and a lot of people LOVE this camera for this.

The GRDII is the same camera with some extra features, they increased the Megapixels and got rid of the 'grain' noise reduction - opting for pixelsmearing. A lot of GRD owners despise the GRDII for this reason.

In the end i ruled out the GRD's as I figured I needed a Zoom. (The GRD's are a fixed lens). Id been shooting with a Lomo LC-A for the past year or so (refinding my love for photography) and the only drawback about that camera was not having a zoom when needing to use the camera for 'touristy' pics (i.e ceilings details in castles or what have you).

The SIgma DP1 is very expensive. It does have the sensor of a DSLR so the picture quality is very high detail. HOWEVER, i read a LOT of reviews saying that this is a difficult camera to get good results from.

In the end i opted for the Ricoh GX100.
It has all the features of the Ricoh GRDII but without the pixelsmearing, its still not as 'grainy' as the GRD but almost, esp at high ISO's.
The GX100 also has a zoom, plus like the GRD you can get aftermarket lenses for it.
In fact - being able to use different addon lenses was a BIG PLUS for getting the Ricoh. Ive got a Nikon wide angle lens and I can use the wide angle lens from my Lomo LC-A on it too.

Ricoh have recently released the GX200, which crams 12MP into a slightly larger sensor but from the images ive seen taken with this camera and the reviews ive read - i dont think its much better than the GX100. in fact the image quality might even be worse - as they seem to have used the same pixelsmearing as the GRDII for noise reduction.

The GX100 is a great camera and it looks the sex too - quite retro - and doesnt look like a flashy camera so youl feel less paranoid about carrying it. Its got a hotshoe too for flashes etc.

If mines fucked up, id still buy another GX100 over the 200 or the SIgma DP1

    • great review mate - you just made up my mind on what i need. going for the GX100 ._me_
