    This debate died in the late 90s when the personal expression of cranbrook / tdr / carson faced the reality of shorter deadlines and greater productivity. Helvetica and neue-modernism came "instyle" becuase its fast and allows designers to illustrate projects themselves.

    There are so many sub-genres in our industry your question is a bit silly. Artist's are commercial artisits too. You have to have a statement, style, and clients.

    If you mean you want to be a Graphic Designer that is contracted because you are artistic you should follow the path of Graphic Havoc, MK12, Ian Anderson.. etc.

    I have had several snowboard designs end up in art galleries. am i an artist or designer? michael Beruit wrote a great article several years ago about stylist vs conceptualist. i look at this as production vs directing. it doesnt matter if you make money or dont, if you have a client or not. you can be good or bad.

    you are an artist... get over it
