There's a Twilight Zone episode about this. Dustin Hoffman goes into a bank vault to get away from everyone so he can read a book. Meanwhile, there's a nuclear war outside and everyone is killed. He's the only person alive on Earth.
He comes out to find total destruction is is understandably upset until he realizes that he can go to a library and read whatever he wants in total peace and silence.
So, he goes, picks out a bunch of books to read, stacks them all up, and accidentally breaks his eyeglasses.
