Im just posting this to bust your balls a bit, Im sure he new gti would smoke an mk1 but as an over-all car I think the mk1 kills the mk5 hands down, it doesn't even come close.
VW is always trying to say how they are getting back to their roots and how the new gti is just like the original..... only its 2 times heavier, with useless gadgets and electronics that will go bad in a year and with sloppy transmission and suspension.
Look I love VWs and the new ones look great, but they are not even in the same league as the originals.

- well, after driving a mk5 i must say i am satisfied that vw have got it right. it performs, it's glossy, tough and has many creature comforts.RoyBoyII
