  I like what Jaline put up. The thing is though, everything goes through a "new media" phase. What we are experiencing right now as new media is simply a flattening of the top-down dissemination of information model that used to govern society. People are now creators of content in real time that can be shared with millions. New media tools have given us that.

  I would suggest reading Marshall McLuhan, Lev Manovitch, and Henry Jenkins for good books on new media.
