Having been through 2 layoffs in 3 years, I have learned to always back up all my work and files and burn them on a CD every 3 months or so. Also make it a rule never to leave too much personal stuff at work. Unless it's a mass layoff Employers don't usually let you stay to clean.
But in your case, take as long as you like. But only if it's on companies time.
